WEISS in Macoupin County, IL
This site traces the family history of descendants of Henry WEISS and Catherine HOLTON. This family settled in Macoupin County, Illinois in the mid-1850's. There were at least two sepatate WEISS lines found in Macoupin County during this time period, and the progenitor of each wsa named HENRY WEISS!. This has complicated my research, to say the least! However, the other Henry immigrated from Germany, so this distinciont has made things a little easier.
My Henry Weiss was born ca. 1822 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Catherine Holton was born in Salem County, New Jersey ca 1826. If you look at a map, you will see these counties are relatively close, separated by the Delaware River. Henry and Catherine were married ca 1846 in Salem County, where they resided until they came to Macoupin County. They had at least 10 children, the first four born in New Jersey, and the other born in Macoupin County. Catherine's surname has been found mis-spelled in various records as HALTON, HOLDEN, and HOLDER, but HOLTON has been found as the middle name of two of her descendants, so is likely the correct spelling.
